Privacy Policy for Bettertype

Effective date: September 2026

The short version. Bettertype is a keyboard, so we know privacy matters more here than in most apps. We do not record, store or upload what you type during normal typing. Text leaves your device only when you choose a feature that needs an online service — such as an AI rewrite, grammar fix, smart reply or voice typing — and only the text or audio needed for that request is sent. We do not store your typed text or voice on our servers, and we never sell your typed text, voice recordings, notes or clipboard contents, and we never use them for advertising.

  1. WHO WE ARE

This Privacy Policy explains how Pixster Studio LLP ("Pixster", "we", "us") handles information when you use the Bettertype keyboard application for Android (the "App"). Pixster is the data fiduciary / data controller for the information described here.

By installing or using the App you acknowledge this Privacy Policy. It should be read together with our Terms of Use.

  1. HOW THE KEYBOARD HANDLES WHAT YOU TYPE

When you enable Bettertype as your keyboard, Android shows a standard warning that a keyboard may be able to collect the text you type, including personal data such as passwords and credit card numbers. This warning appears for every third-party keyboard. Here is exactly what we do:

  • Normal typing stays on your device. Key presses, autocorrect, word suggestions, glide typing and text shortcuts are processed locally. We do not log keystrokes or send your everyday typing to our servers.

  • Personalised dictionary. To improve suggestions, the App may learn words you use frequently and store them locally on your device. You can clear this learned data at any time in the App's settings.

  • Sensitive fields are excluded. When an app marks a field as a password, PIN or similar sensitive input (or requests "no personalised learning"/incognito input), the App does not learn from it, does not offer AI features in it, and does not save it to clipboard history.

  • Text is sent only when you ask. Text is transmitted off your device only when you actively tap an AI or online feature (see Section 3). Nothing is sent in the background.

  1. INFORMATION WE PROCESS, BY FEATURE

3.1 AI text features (grammar fix, AI rewrite, tone changer, summarise, smart reply)

When you use one of these features, the text you selected or typed in the current input field (and, for smart reply, the message text you choose to reply to) is sent over an encrypted connection to a cloud function that we operate on Google Firebase. The cloud function forwards the request to OpenAI, whose GPT model (currently GPT-5.6 Luna) generates the result, and returns the result to your keyboard. Our cloud function only relays the request and response; we do not store your text or the AI output in any database or log. OpenAI processes this text under its own API data usage terms and privacy policy, available at openai.com/policies/privacy-policy.

  • We use this text only to provide the result you requested.

  • We do not use your text to build advertising profiles. Under OpenAI's API terms, data sent through the API is not used to train OpenAI's models by default; OpenAI may retain it for a limited period to monitor for abuse, in accordance with its policies.

  • Requests are not linked to your name, email or phone number; we do not require an account.

Please avoid sending highly sensitive information (such as passwords, financial account numbers or health details) through AI features.

3.2 Voice features (voice typing, AI Polish, voice translation, floating voice badge)

  • The microphone is used only while you are actively using a voice feature — for example after tapping the microphone key or the floating voice badge. A visible indicator is shown while recording. The App never listens in the background.

  • Your audio is converted to text by a speech recognition service. Where audio is processed online, it is sent over an encrypted connection solely to produce the transcription.

  • AI Polish and voice translation send the resulting transcript through our cloud function to OpenAI as described in 3.1.

  • We do not store audio recordings or transcripts on our servers.

3.3 Offline text translation

Offline translation runs entirely on your device using downloaded language packs. The text you translate is not sent to us. The App connects to the internet only to download language packs, which does not involve your text.

3.4 Media (GIFs, stickers, memes, clips, emoji)

To show GIFs, stickers, memes and clips, the App sends your search terms (for example "happy birthday") and basic technical information such as your IP address, language and device type to our content provider, KLIPY. KLIPY processes that information under its own privacy policy, available at klipy.co/documentation/privacy. We do not store your media searches. Emoji are stored and rendered locally.

3.5 Clipboard

If you enable clipboard history, items you copy are stored locally on your device so you can paste them later. Clipboard history is never uploaded or shared. Items are cleared automatically after a period of time unless pinned, and you can delete them at any time. Content copied from password fields is not saved.

3.6 Notes

Notes you create in the App are stored locally on your device. Notes are not uploaded to or stored on our servers. Uninstalling the App deletes locally stored notes.

3.7 Themes, keyboard styles, settings, vibration and haptics

Your theme, layout, language, autocorrect, glide typing, text shortcut and haptic preferences are stored locally on your device. Downloading a theme may require a network request, which does not include your typed content.

3.8 Purchases and subscriptions

Purchases are handled by Google Play. We do not receive your full payment card details. Google provides us with purchase information such as a purchase token, product ID, order status and date, which we use to unlock premium features and verify your entitlement (including through the Google Play Licensing check).

3.9 Usage, diagnostic and attribution data

We use Google Firebase services to collect limited technical information to operate and improve the App: Firebase Crashlytics collects crash reports and diagnostic data (such as device model, Android version, app version and the state of the App at the time of a crash), and Google Analytics for Firebase collects app usage events (such as app opens, screens viewed and which features are used and how often), along with an app instance identifier, device and app information, language and approximate location (country or city, derived from IP address). These services never receive what you type, your voice, your notes or your clipboard. Google processes this data under its privacy policy, available at policies.google.com/privacy. We also collect install-attribution data described in Section 7.

  1. APP PERMISSIONS

The App requests only the permissions it needs. You can review or revoke runtime permissions in Android Settings → Apps → Bettertype → Permissions.

  • RECORD_AUDIO (Microphone): Voice typing, AI Polish, voice translation and the floating voice badge. Used only while you actively use a voice feature. Asked at runtime; you can deny it and still use every non-voice feature.

  • INTERNET: Sending your requests to AI features and voice services, loading GIFs/stickers/memes/clips, downloading themes and language packs, verifying purchases, and analytics/attribution.

  • ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE: Checks whether you are online before starting a network request, so the App can tell you when a feature needs a connection or fall back to offline features.

  • VIBRATE: Haptic feedback on key taps, long presses and glide/swipe typing. Can be turned off in the App's settings.

  • com.google.android.gms.permission.AD_ID: Reads the Google Advertising ID on Android 13+ for analytics and marketing attribution via Google Analytics for Firebase (Section 7).

  • BIND_GET_INSTALL_REFERRER_SERVICE: Lets the Google Play Install Referrer API, used by Google Analytics for Firebase, tell us which campaign or source led to your install.

  • com.android.vending.CHECK_LICENSE: Google Play Licensing check, used with Google Play Billing to confirm the App and your purchases are genuine.

  1. HOW WE USE INFORMATION

To provide the features you request (AI text features, voice features, media search, translation).

  • To process purchases, verify licences and provide premium features.

  • To keep the App secure, detect abuse and fraud, and enforce our Terms.

  • To diagnose crashes, fix bugs and improve performance and features, using aggregated or de-identified usage data.

  • To measure the effectiveness of our marketing campaigns (Section 7).

  • To respond to your support requests and communicate important changes.

  • To comply with legal obligations.

Legal bases. Section 11 sets out our legal bases in detail. In summary, where laws such as India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 or the EU/UK GDPR apply, we process information on the basis of your consent (for example, microphone access and advertising attribution), to perform our contract with you (providing the features you request), for our legitimate interests (security, improving the App), and to comply with law. You may withdraw consent at any time; this does not affect processing that already took place.

  1. WHO WE SHARE INFORMATION WITH

We do not sell personal information, and we do not share your typed text, voice, notes or clipboard with advertisers. We share information only with:

  • Service providers that help us provide the App: OpenAI (AI text and voice-polish features); Google LLC (Firebase Cloud Functions, Firebase Crashlytics and Google Analytics for Firebase); KLIPY (GIFs, stickers, memes and clips); and speech recognition service providers. Each provider receives only the information needed for its function.

  • Google, for Google Play Billing, Licensing and the Install Referrer API.

  • Authorities, when required by law, court order or governmental request, or to protect the rights, property or safety of Pixster, our users or others.

  • A successor, if Pixster is involved in a merger, acquisition or sale of assets, subject to this Policy.

  1. ADVERTISING ID & INSTALL ATTRIBUTION

We use Google Analytics for Firebase to understand which marketing campaigns lead to installs and how the App is used. For this purpose, Google Analytics for Firebase may collect your Google Advertising ID, install referrer data (the campaign or source that led to your install), device and app information, IP address and in-app events such as app opens and purchases. Google's privacy policy is available at policies.google.com/privacy.

Your keyboard input, voice, notes and clipboard are never shared with Google Analytics or used for advertising.

Opting out: you can delete or reset your Advertising ID in Android Settings → Privacy → Ads (or Google → Ads). When deleted, apps receive a string of zeros instead of your ID.

  1. HOW LONG WE KEEP INFORMATION

AI and voice requests: not stored by us. Text and transcripts pass through our cloud function only for the time needed to return a result. OpenAI may retain API data for a limited period under its own policies.

  • Data stored on your device (learned words, clipboard, notes, settings): kept until you delete it or uninstall the App.

  • Purchase records: kept as long as required for tax, accounting and legal purposes.

  • Analytics and attribution data: Google Analytics event data is kept for the retention period configured in our Google Analytics settings (no longer than 14 months); Crashlytics crash reports are kept for up to 90 days.

  1. SECURITY

All data sent between the App and online services (our cloud function, OpenAI, KLIPY and Google) uses encryption in transit (TLS). We do not maintain our own database of your typed text, voice, notes or clipboard. We limit access to personal information to staff and providers who need it, and we apply reasonable technical and organisational safeguards. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but if we become aware of a personal data breach affecting you, we will notify you and the relevant authorities as required by law.

  1. YOUR CHOICES AND RIGHTS

You can control most data processing directly in the App and on your device:

  • Revoke microphone access, or simply avoid voice features.

  • Avoid AI and online features; core typing and offline translation work without them.

  • Clear learned words, clipboard history and notes in the App's settings.

  • Reset or delete your Advertising ID in Android settings.

  • Uninstall the App to remove all locally stored data.

Depending on where you live, you may also have rights over your personal information. If you are in India, under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 you may request a summary of the personal data we process and with whom it has been shared, request correction, completion, updating or erasure of your personal data, withdraw consent, have a grievance redressed, and nominate another person to exercise your rights in the event of death or incapacity. You may also approach the Data Protection Board of India. Users in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland should also read Section 11, and California residents should also read Section 12.

To make a request, email feedback@pixsterstudio.com. Because we do not require accounts, we may ask for information such as your Advertising ID or purchase order number to locate data held by our service providers. Because we do not store your typed text, voice, notes or clipboard, we do not hold that content to provide or delete. We will respond within the time required by applicable law.

  1. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FOR USERS IN THE EEA, UK AND SWITZERLAND (GDPR)

This section applies if you are located in the European Economic Area (EEA), the United Kingdom or Switzerland, where the EU General Data Protection Regulation, the UK GDPR and the UK Data Protection Act 2018, or the Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection (together, "GDPR") apply.

Controller. Pixster Studio LLP is the controller of your personal data processed through the App. You can contact us at feedback@pixsterstudio.com.

Legal bases for processing. We rely on the following legal bases:

  • Performance of a contract (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR): processing text you submit to AI features through our cloud function and OpenAI; converting your voice to text; fetching GIFs, stickers, memes and clips from KLIPY; and processing and verifying purchases through Google Play.

  • Consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR): microphone access for voice features, which you grant through the Android permission prompt; and collection of your Advertising ID and analytics events by Google Analytics for Firebase for analytics and campaign attribution. You can withdraw consent at any time by revoking the microphone permission, deleting your Advertising ID in Android settings, or contacting us.

  • Legitimate interests (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR): crash reporting and diagnostics through Firebase Crashlytics, to keep the App stable and secure, and preventing abuse and fraud. We have balanced these interests against your rights, and the data involved does not include your typed content.

  • Legal obligation (Art. 6(1)(c) GDPR): retaining purchase records for tax and accounting purposes and responding to lawful requests from authorities.

Your rights. Subject to the conditions set out in the GDPR, you have the right to:

  • access the personal data we hold about you and receive a copy of it;

  • have inaccurate personal data corrected;

  • have your personal data erased;

  • restrict how we process your personal data;

  • receive your personal data in a structured, commonly used and machine-readable format and have it transmitted to another controller (data portability);

  • object to processing based on our legitimate interests;

  • withdraw your consent at any time, without affecting the lawfulness of processing before withdrawal; and

  • lodge a complaint with the data protection supervisory authority in the country where you live or work, or where an alleged infringement took place (in the UK, the Information Commissioner's Office).

To exercise these rights, email feedback@pixsterstudio.com. We will respond within one month, which may be extended by two further months for complex requests, in which case we will tell you. Because we do not store your typed text, voice, notes or clipboard, we do not hold that content; requests will cover the data held by us and by our service providers on our behalf.

Automated decision-making. AI features generate text suggestions at your request. We do not make decisions about you based solely on automated processing that produce legal or similarly significant effects.

Providing data. You are not required to provide personal data to use the App's core keyboard features. If you do not grant microphone access or do not use online features, those specific features will not be available.

International transfers. Our service providers OpenAI and Google may process personal data in the United States and other countries outside the EEA, UK and Switzerland. Where these countries do not have an adequacy decision, transfers are protected by the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses (and the UK International Data Transfer Addendum), or by the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework and its UK and Swiss extensions where the recipient is certified. You may request more information about these safeguards by contacting us.

  1. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FOR CALIFORNIA RESIDENTS (CCPA)

Sale and sharing. We do not sell personal information, and we do not share personal information for cross-context behavioural advertising, as those terms are defined in the CCPA. We have not done so in the preceding 12 months. We have no actual knowledge of selling or sharing the personal information of consumers under 16 years of age.

Sensitive personal information. We use sensitive personal information only to provide the services you request, as permitted by the CCPA, and not to infer characteristics about you. We therefore do not offer a right to limit its use.

  • request correction of inaccurate personal information;

  • opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information (although we do not sell or share it);

  • not be discriminated against for exercising any of these rights.

How to make a request. Email feedback@pixsterstudio.com with the subject line "California Privacy Request". Because we do not operate user accounts, we will verify your request by asking for information such as your Advertising ID or Google Play order number, which we match against data held by our service providers. You may use an authorised agent to submit a request on your behalf; we may ask the agent for proof of your written authorisation and ask you to verify your identity directly. We will confirm receipt within 10 business days and respond within 45 calendar days, which may be extended by a further 45 days where reasonably necessary, in which case we will tell you.

  1. CHILDREN

The App is not directed at children. You must be at least 13 years old (or the minimum age required in your country) to use it, and users under 18 should use it only with the involvement of a parent or guardian. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children in breach of applicable law. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

  1. INTERNATIONAL TRANSFERS

Pixster is based in India. Our service providers may process information in other countries, including the United States. We transfer personal data only to countries not restricted under Indian law. For users in the EEA, UK and Switzerland, the safeguards we use are described in Section 11.

  1. CHANGES TO THIS POLICY

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will post the updated version with a new "Last updated" date and, for material changes (for example, a new use of your typed text or voice), we will notify you in the App before the change takes effect and ask for your consent where the law requires it.
